One of the leading figures of the French New Anticapitalist Party (NPA), Alain Krivin, paid a visit yesterday, February 26th, to the 300 migrants hunger strikers in Athens. The immigrants are on the 34th day of the hunger strike and 4 of them are now in hospitals due to severe health problems. The Greek government says that it will neither make any massive legalization of undocumented immigrants, nor it will legalize the hunger strikers. Furthermore the responsible for legalization issues Greek Minister of Internal Affairs, Yannis Ragoussis, said that the solidarity movement will be responsible for any hypothetical deaths of hunger strikers.
After talking to the hunger strikers, Alain Krivine made the following statement:
“I have come here to bring a message of solidarity to the 300 hunger strikers. This is a scandalous situation that it is not only in Greece, but also in France. In the context of financial crisis, governments and employers have agreed in not giving any kind of legalization to the migrant workers. This decision actually means that after migrants have been overexploited for many years, now they will be thrown out of Europe. In front of this situation, we need a wide, massive, unitary mobilization in every country and in all of Europe as well, for demanding from the governments the fundamental human rights and the legalization of men and women who have worked hard for many years in our societies.”.
